Bishop Trautman: Let's Keep Them Dumbed Down

Bishop Donald Trautman:
"Let ME translate that for you, you poor pathetic idiots."

Bishop Trautman is at it again. For the first time in decades, we are about to get an accurate translation of the Roman Missal for use at Mass. However, Bishop Trautman is afraid that we can't understand some of those big, bad words! You can read about it here, but I'll share a few of the words and phrases he thinks you are too stupid to figure out:

"ineffable"

"ancient bondage"

"They speak of 'into the joy of true peace.'"

You see, Bishop Trautman thinks that Mass should be in the "language of the people."

So who are "the people"? Is this a socio-economic or demographic designation? If I am not one of "the people" does that make me an elitist snob? If I am one of "the people", does that mean I had low SAT scores?

Anyone who has taught (and even a few public school teachers) knows that students rise to the level of the teacher's expectations. Bishop Trautman seems to be abdicating his episcopal duty as teacher and substituting his role with "babysitter". And he plans on trying to persuade his brother bishops at their meeting this weekend (in Orlando) to dumb down the translation again.

Didn't peasants fill the floor gallery at the Globe for Shakespear's plays? If you can understand a fraction of Shakespearean dialogue, an accurate translation of the Mass should be a slam dunk.

Finally, this wouldn't be a problem if Mass were still in Latin, the language that once unified the Church.

Oops...I forgot. We now have Masses in Spanish, English, Vietnamese and Polish, while the folk group cranks out syrupy songs about our "unity".

¡Que Estupido!

Your commments once again are right on point.

As a Confirmation as well as Math teacher, I do notice my students rise to the challenge.

God forbid a priest has to use 2 min of his homily to explain consubstantial, or incarnate, lol.

Even when Mass was offered in the vernacular in the early Church, the level of language was higher. (Hence the difference between Classical and Church Latin).

Bp. Trautperson STILL doesn't get it.

Perhaps Bishop Trautman has a point: American Catholics seem to have a difficult time comprehending the word "marriage." Perhaps priests (and parents) should spend more time on the definition of that word and then, once the students fully comprehend, move on to explicating ineffable.
